The city’s salt supplier will receive naming rights for the Indianapolis snow-removal force in exchange for providing Indianapolis with extra salt and five new trucks over the next five years.

Mayor Greg Ballard was to announce the deal with Minneapolis-based Cargill this afternoon. The city will begin referring to its snow-removal efforts as “Indy Snow Force Powered by Cargill.”

Cargill has long supplied salt for the barns maintained by the Indianapolis Department of Public Works. During its partnership with the city, according to a news release, Cargill will give the city 125 tons of salt and five Ford F250 pickups outfitted with snow plows and salt spreaders.

The salt that will be provided is just a drop in the bucket compared with the tens of thousands of tons that are spread each winter by Indianapolis’ 73 snowplow trucks.

But the city plans to use the additional salt in part to help clear snow and ice from parking lots at charter schools and libraries. The pickups are smaller than most of the city’s heavy-duty snow plow trucks and are better suited for clearing walkways, parking lots and tighter corridors. During the summer, according to the release, Indy Parks’ Summer Servings program, which provides lunches for low-income children participating at park sites across the city, will make use of the trucks.

Cargill selected Indianapolis as a pilot city for its new “Safe and Smart” program.

“A key element to the selection of Indianapolis for this partnership is our shared vision of a commitment to the best practices that allow for financially and environmentally responsible snow and ice removal,” Sean Riley, Cargill Deicing’s sales and marketing manager, said in the news release.

It’s the two-minute warning in terms of Super Bowl advertising and Chevrolet still has some ground to cover. General Motors’ largest brand is still mulling its advertising lineup with less than two weeks remaining until the New York Giants and New England Patriots meet in the big game.

Chevrolet has purchased seven spots. Exactly which vehicles will be featured and at what times is still stirring healthy debate at GM headquarters.

“Every day, we’re changing the spots of what’s running where,” said Chris Perry, Chevrolet’s vice president of global marketing and strategy. “We’re probably going to push it to the end.”

That comes Tuesday, Jan. 31 when NBC wants final decisions. Click past the jump to continue reading.

Two ads will air pregame, three during the first half and two following the Super Bowl.

Here’s what Chevy executives know so far: Of the seven spots, two will air during pregame programming, three will air during the first half of the game and two will air following the Super Bowl’s conclusion.

Two of the three in-game advertisements will be 60-second spots that profile the Silverado and Sonic, the latter of which features the Fun.’s “We Are Young.”

Three of the five 30-second spots will feature the Sonic. There are also two Volt ads, including one that pokes fun at the constant questions surrounding its electric inner workings. There’s no word yet on another Volt ad that has been making the rounds online, which features Hamtramck, MI, the car’s origin of assembly. And don’t forget the “Happy Grad” ad, which features a recent college grad who mistakenly believes his parents bought him a Camaro convertible as a graduation gift (below).

It’s unknown in which position those spots will run. The remaining two spots are still under discussion, although executives said they’re attempting to meld both lighthearted and serious messaging during the game.

“Our real challenge is to change opinion and consideration of Chevrolets.”

“Our real challenge is to change opinion and consideration of Chevrolets,” said Rich Martinek, manager of the Chevy ad group. “Once an iconic brand, we’ve had some struggles in the past. Now we’re headed in the right direction.”

In recent days, that direction has included consolidating its global advertising operations. GM announced it has chosen London’s Carat agency. Previously, it had employed more than 50 agencies that purchased ads.

That direction will also include more social media than ever before. Chevrolet introduced the “Chevy Game Time” app during the NFC Championship game, and it has already been downloaded 130,000 times. Among other novelties, the app allows users to register to win 20 Chevy models that GM will give away during Super Bowl festivities.
They’ve also streamlined advertising efforts with the Facebook sites of individual dealers, purchased automotive exclusivity on NBC’s livestreaming of the game online and advertising exclusivity on the #SuperBowl hashtag on Twitter.
Overall, executives expect 500 million impressions on Facebook and 1.5 billion impressions from their entire Super Bowl advertising campaign.
“We’re not just on the screen, but on the second screen as well,” said Perry, noting that consumers are increasingly engaged online while simultaneously watching television. “So this is a way for people to engage with Chevrolet, and an avenue we can use in the future to engage with consumers.”

Shown as a prototype version of the 2013 RDX, the second generation of Acura’s five-passenger crossover SUV will up the ante with a new approach to achieving both advanced performance and fuel efficiency via a new engine, transmission and all-wheel drive system.

The 2013 RDX, scheduled to launch in Spring 2012, will have as standard equipment a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 273 horsepower— 33 more than the outgoing model. For even higher performance and improved fuel economy, the RDX makes use of a 6-speed automatic transmission with a new lock-up torque converter. The RDX also gets a new, lighter all-wheel-drive system that provides the required performance and safety with increased efficiency.

With anticipated EPA fuel economy ratings of 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, front-wheel-drive models of the 2013 RDX are expected to offer the best fuel economy of any gasoline-powered luxury SUV in its class.

The RDX exterior incorporates a sleek, more aerodynamically efficient body, evolving RDX from a sporty, compact SUV to a more formal look with a longer, sculpted hood and styling that is more elegant and sophisticated to match the Acura philosophy of timeless, beautiful design. Chassis updates include a longer wheelbase and wider track, all-new Amplitude Reactive Dampers, and a new motion adaptive electronic power steering system.

Inside the 2013 RDX, new sweeping shapes, matte surface trim, and generous use of leather combine to give the RDX interior an upscale look and luxury feel that Acura customers have come to expect. Abundant use of sound deadening materials and Active Sound Control team to provide an exceptionally quiet cabin. Additional interior features, such as larger door openings, more passenger room, increased cargo volume and a power rear tailgate make the RDX interior even more accommodating and flexible.

As with the ILX, the 2013 RDX will receive a host of new technologies including Pandora internet radio interface, SMS text message feature, a smart entry keyless access system, pushbutton start, and a three view rear camera. An available Technology Package will provide a full complement of relevant technologies, including AcuraLink® Satellite Communication System, Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™, AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic with Traffic Rerouting™, and AcuraLink Real-Time Weather™ with radar image maps. New for 2013, the even more advanced navigation system utilizes a hard disk drive (HDD) with 60 gigabytes of storage capacity – including 15 gigabytes that can be allocated for music storage.

Acura anticipates that the RDX will achieve top ratings in both NHTSA and IIHS crash safety testing.

Production of the new RDX will move to the East Liberty, Ohio plant of Honda of America Mfg., Inc.— home to one of the four top assembly lines in North America in the J.D. Power and Associates’ 2011 Initial Quality Study (IQS). The first generation RDX has been built at the Marysville, Ohio auto plant, an IQS award winner for both of its assembly lines.

The figures have been tallied for the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. in 2011, and not surprisingly, the Ford F-Series pickup truck is king of the heap once again. Dealers sold a total of 584,917 F-Series units in 2011, beating out the second-place Chevrolet Silverado by 169,787 units. The Toyota Camry filled out the podium with 308,510 sales, which left the top three unaltered from their 2010 rankings. Fourth place went to the surging Nissan Altima, which jumped from its seventh place position last year. Likewise, the Ford Escape enjoyed a jolt in popularity as well. While the aging CUV took the 13th spot last year, the Ford sold 254,293 units to take fifth place in 2011.

That bumped the Honda Accord and its Crosstour variant to sixth place. Interestingly enough, the Honda duo just barely beat out the Ford Fusion by 5,000 units. Were the two Honda models to be split, the Fusion would have easily knocked the Accord further down the list. Likewise, the Toyota Corolla and Matrix teamed up to edge out the Chevrolet Cruze for ninth and tenth places, respectively. Head over to The Examiner for a full chart detailing the top 20 best-selling vehicles in the U.S. for 2011.

Due to the large demand for the F-series pickup trucks, accessories such as Ford-150 Oval Nerf Bars and Ford-150 Mesh Grilles are popular accessories sold at Automax Styling.

How NOT to Wash your Jeep Wrangler

Here’s one from the videos-you-should-keep-to-yourself file. The clip after the jump shows a couple of guys who have decided it’s time to wash their Jeep Wrangler at a local car wash bay. The quarters go in, the power washer fires up and the Wrangler gets the suds. At least that’s how things start off. It doesn’t take long for the power washer nozzle to get away from our heroes, spraying them with water and beating them about the body as the pressurized contraption flails around the wash bay.

Miraculously, the Jeep seems safe from the jet-propelled hose, and the two would-be car washers seem to get away with little more than a few bumps and bruises. The rest of us are left with a genuinely hilarious video. Remember to visit Automax Styling for cool jeep wrangler gadgets such as Jeep Wrangler Oval Nerf Bar or Jeep Wrangler Bug Deflector.

Volvo Trucks is celebrating a strong year in 2011, in which it says it reached its highest ever North American market share.

WardsAuto Group data indicated Volvo accounted for 12.1% of the combined US and Canadian retail market in 2011, a new high for the company. The data also showed Volvo gained more market share than any other manufacturer in 2011, the company announced. Volvo officials said the company also reached “record penetration levels” for its own engines and I-Shift automated transmission.

The company attributes its growth to a particularly strong performance in the US where its market share grew nearly three points and retail sales increased 109% over 2010 levels.

In 2010, its combined US and Canadian market share was 9.6%. It finished 2011 at 12.1% with a total retail volume of 23,820 units compared to just 12,100 in 2010.

“Coming after our two-point market share gain in 2010, this record 2011 performance demonstrates the market’s continued recognition of the excellent fuel efficiency and industry-leading driver comfort and safety features that Volvo Trucks is delivering today,” said Ron Huibers, president of North American truck sales and marketing. “The performance of our broad dealer network helped achieve an improved customer mix, and our fuel efficiency leadership means we’re well positioned as fleets intensify their focus on lowering fuel costs.”

Huibers said the company’s proprietary engines and I-Shift transmission have been driving growth as both have performed well in the field. The percentage of Volvo trucks sold with Volvo engines hit a new high of nearly 80% in 2011, he added. And I-Shift penetration also set a new record of more than 40% of those.

“Volvo’s integrated powertrain approach drives fuel efficiency leadership and facilitates innovations, like the XE13 fuel efficiency package, which cannot be replicated without the highest degree of coordination throughout every layer of the organization” Huibers said.

Toyota Tundra in a Nutshell

When it originally debuted near the start of the new millennium, the Toyota Tundra was considered by many people to be the first import-brand full-size pickup truck to truly go head-to-head against the Big Three’s pickups. It had a lot of things in its favor, including a refined V8 engine and the backing of Toyota’s reputation for reliability and durability.

However, the first-generation Toyota Tundra ultimately found more of an audience with recreational pickup buyers than with hard-core users. Not quite full-size in dimensions or work capacity, the Tundra appealed to those seeking an easy-to-drive commuter or utility vehicle capable of handling weekend trips to the local home improvement center. Independent contractors, or those with heavy trailers or boats to pull, were put off by the original Tundra’s limited body configurations, smaller size and lower tow ratings.

A redesigned Tundra pickup has arrived, however, and with it Toyota hopes this truck will finally attract serious pickup truck buyers. An American-built half-ton truck with true full-size proportions, the second-generation Tundra features three cab sizes, three bed lengths and a choice of three engines. In pretty much every measure, the Toyota Tundra stands equal to competing 1500-series pickups.

2012 Chevrolet Suburban Review

The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban ranks 1 out of 7 Affordable Large SUVs. For shoppers who need its brawny towing abilities, cavernous interior and chart-topping passenger capacity, the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban is a good choice.

Reviewers acknowledge that most people who shop for a Chevy Suburban could get by just fine with an all-wheel drive crossover or minivan. But if you have your heart set on a big SUV with real four-wheel drive, lots of towing ability and seating for the whole baseball team, test drivers say the Chevrolet Suburban is a good choice. Its base V8 engine might not be quite as muscular as the larger eight-cylinder engine found in three-quarter ton models, but the Suburban gets better fuel economy than most, and reviewers say it has plenty of power for most drivers.

They also love its comfortable ride and that it is easy-to-drive, which makes this behemoth feel a bit more manageable. Additionally, the Suburban’s well-equipped interior wins praise for its high-quality feel. But the Suburban has some significant drawbacks. The optional larger V8 engine, though more powerful, comes with a major drop in fuel economy, so reviewers only recommend it for buyers who need to tow or haul big loads.

Its heavy third row of seats must be removed and stored elsewhere in order to maximize cargo space, and this process seems like even more of a pain when you consider that most of the Suburban’s competitors have third rows that fold down into the floor. Finally, its third row is barely big enough for teenagers, so if you plan to chauffer adults in those seats, you’ll want to look elsewhere.

Though the market for full-size, truck-based family haulers may be dwindling, there are still plenty of people who want lots of utility and seating capacity out of their SUV. Reviewers say that these people would do well to put the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban at the top of their shopping lists.

2012 Ram 1500 Review

The 2012 Ram 1500 ranks 1 out of 9 Full Size Pickup Trucks. This ranking is based on 36 published reviews and test drives of the Ram 1500.

Reviewers love the 2012 Ram 1500’s best-in-class ride, convenient cargo storage options and well-made interior, calling it one of the best full size pickups in the class.

Test drivers say the 2012 Ram 1500 drives like a car, which is unheard-of for a full-size pickup truck. It is one of the smoothest-driving trucks around, thanks to its advanced suspension. Not only is its top-of-the-line Laramie Longhorn trim nearly as upscale as that of a luxury car, but even its lower trims’ interiors are well-made and comfortable. Reviewers also say that most of its engine options are more than capable for most tasks. Also, a few test drivers note that the back seat accommodations aren’t quite as nice as those up front in extended and crew cab models.

If you’re looking for a fuel-efficient truck, you may want to consider the Ford F-150 Ecoboost or one of GM’s hybrid siblings, the GMC Sierra Hybrid or the Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid. But even considering these options, reviewers say that the Ram’s great interior and smooth ride might be worth the trade-off in gas mileage.

Some accessories to consider for customizing your Dodge Ram are Dodge Ram Fender Flares, Dodge Ram Oval Nerf Bars, and Dodge Ram Trailer Hitches.
